Vic and his Peace Of Mind

October 8, 2008 § 1 Comment

Melbourne, Australia – St Kilda

I met a man called Vic. He lives in a disparate way, at odds with society, amongst the cobwebs, moths and other creatures of floorboards and hidden cupboard corners. He is alone, haunted by the ghosts of his paranoia. People are out to get him. Prime Ministers from long ago want his blood. He talks about hope and the goodness of humanity. Also the stupidity. He tells me that we will be friends. He tells me that he knows it.

Policy: In August 2007, the Australian government announced that all African refugees will have to sit an “integration test”.

The new gateway test – which was developed with African refugees in mind – will assess their ability to adapt to the Australian way of life.

In October 2007, the doors of the “lucky country” were shut to Africa and justified with anecdotal reports of largely Sudanese issues. Census figures show that there are at least 210, 464 African migrants in Australia from 43 countries. Only 19,049 are Sudanese.

People: “There are three pictures on the living room wall. Queen Elizabeth is flanked on the one side by the legendary footballer George Best. On the other is a portrait of Pauline Hanson, the co-founder of the anti-immigration One Nation party, who in the late 1990s warned that Australia was in danger of being swamped by Asians.

There is a seemingly incompatible situation of a migrant family from England supporting a controversial anti-immigration politician.

Their reasons are simple enough – if unpalatable for many people. Here they are away from the gloom and the cold and they don’t want anything or anyone to come in and spoil what they see as their slice of paradise.

They want the drawbridge raised – and the door firmly locked.

As the father explained, they had left Britain to “escape the blacks” and didn’t want to have to move again.”  – Phil Mercer for BBC news.

Honolulu, Hawaii, USA – the bedroom

I have a tattoo now. It’s on my forearm and it’s big. It’s also very beautiful. In exchange, I took some photographs of the first man who marked my body for life with his girlfriend. It was an intimate exchange from both sides.

Honolulu, Hawaii, USA – a room, in a house, in a neighbourhood with dogs across the road.

In our own rooms, revealed. Concealed in dark, outlined by the wash of a streetlamp spilling in from the outside.  Unsharp, unclear, questions hovering in the dark spaces. Sometimes the most beautiful of scenes are the ones that leave some things unsaid.
