Melbourne, Australia – Amber Lounge Dancehall Queen competition

Policy: In August 2007, the Australian government announced that all African refugees will have to sit an “integration test”.

The new gateway test – which was developed with African refugees in mind – will assess their ability to adapt to the Australian way of life.

In October 2007, the doors of the “lucky country” were shut to Africa and justified with anecdotal reports of largely Sudanese issues. Census figures show that there are at least 210, 464 African migrants in Australia from 43 countries. Only 19,049 are Sudanese.

People: “There are three pictures on the living room wall. Queen Elizabeth is flanked on the one side by the legendary footballer George Best. On the other is a portrait of Pauline Hanson, the co-founder of the anti-immigration One Nation party, who in the late 1990s warned that Australia was in danger of being swamped by Asians.

There is a seemingly incompatible situation of a migrant family from England supporting a controversial anti-immigration politician.

Their reasons are simple enough – if unpalatable for many people. Here they are away from the gloom and the cold and they don’t want anything or anyone to come in and spoil what they see as their slice of paradise.

They want the drawbridge raised – and the door firmly locked.

As the father explained, they had left Britain to “escape the blacks” and didn’t want to have to move again.”  – Phil Mercer for BBC news.

Wow – interesting and sad post. It’s disheartening to hear to what extent racism is made policy, and to what extent it is accepted and supported by so many.

Your pictures, by the way, are outstanding. I love the gritty treatment you’ve given these shots. There’s something exciting in the sexuality inherent here, and the composition does a lot to highlight the subject matter.

I’m glad I found your blog – I’ll be back often to read/view your work.
